AMA TORONTO SEPTEMBER BLOG

This month I’ve got lots of exciting news to share with you about AMA Toronto and what we’re doing for our members both here in the city and across the country. From our first in person AMA Toronto Board meeting, a collaboration with fellow Canadian BC AMA chapter to honor our 2021 Canada’s Marketing Hall of Legends inductees, my first in-depth interview to kick off a new series entitled “Leadership Conversations”, to a special week of marketing events, AMA Toronto is busy creating spaces and ideas that shine a light on empowering leadership potential and the best work marketers are doing.

Truth and Reconciliation Day

On September 30, AMA Toronto will honor its commitment to Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) by celebrating Truth & Reconciliation Day. Acknowledging this day aligns with our ongoing commitment to advancing truth and reconciliation in partnership with Indigenous Peoples. This day commemorates the ongoing legacy of residential schools, and the communities impacted. This day offers us all a chance to facilitate healing, to commit to educating ourselves on the truth of our shared history, and to understand how we can advance reconciliation. 

Legends Among Us

This month, we kicked off our first Legendary Leadership event series celebrating 2021 inductees to Canada’s Marketing Hall of Legends, co-founders of Nature’s Path Foods. Suzie York, CEO of Love Good Fats moderated an inspiring panel conversation that shared insights on building a food movement, the servant leadership style that Arran and Ratana Stephens subscribe to, and their promise to leave the earth better than you found it.

In addition to hearing about our current AMA Toronto Marketing Hall of Legends, we always want to share updates about accomplishments of past honored legends and we’re so thrilled to share more news about former inductee Frank Palmer, who is launching his new podcast “Ad Chats with Frank Palmer” where he sits down with leaders in the industry  (his second episode features past Marketing Hall of Legends inductee and Venture Communications founder Arlene Dickenson) for candid conversations and special insights. The series debuted Sept. 16 on Spotify. 

Speaking of podcasts and past Legends, many of you have tuned into AMA Toronto’s Marketing Hall of Legend alumni Tony Chapman’s “Chatter that Matters” podcast, but if you haven’t, you won’t want to miss a beat after you experience one of Tony’s many dynamic conversations with his guests. With a newly launched and revamped website, you can browse through many of Tony’s Chatter that Matters podcast conversations here. 

 

AMA Marketing Week 2021

Every year, AMA chapters across North America plan events that focus on the strengths and opportunities marketers have and the AMA Toronto chapter has a myriad of experiences for members and non-members alike. For one week only October 4th-8th, non-members will get an inside look at the training, webinars, and networking connections available to our members and check out the advantages to being an AMA member. It’s a chance to sharpen skills and gain insight on the tools, templates and experiences that AMA has to offer. Learn more about what’s happening at AMA Marketing Week and join one of many of the upcoming AMA events across Canada and the U.S.

Leadership Deep Dive

Speaking of leadership, I sat down with Chief Brand and Commercial Officer at the Canadian Olympic Committee Jacquie Ryan to kick off the first of a new series I’m excited to launch called “Leadership Conversations” where I will share insights and tips from different leaders in support of AMA Toronto’s promise to help empower your leadership potential. Take a moment to read my interview with Jacquie and learn more about her leadership journey and why she feels so strongly about supporting and mentoring other marketers.

What I’m Reading

We’ve been talking a lot about leadership and inspiration and I have been inspired by so many of my AMA colleagues, fellow chapter leaders and the amazing work they do. This past summer, I attended AMA’s Leadership Summit with chapter leaders across Canada and the U.S. to learn, connect and grow. One of the keynote speakers was author, entrepreneur and speaker Erica Dhawan who spoke about how leaders navigate interactions across virtual teams and the power of our digital body language.  As a working mom and marketing leader juggling daily interactions in this new “virtual work environment” this book has helped shape my perspective on the importance of connection and communication. I’ve shared this book with my Board of Directors and I encourage you to read her book “Digital Language – How to build trust and connection, no matter the distance”. I have challenged myself to read a book every month to continue learning and growing (thank goodness for Audible!) and I hope to share more of what I am reading with all of you to find inspiration and expand your leadership potential.
