With 30+ years of international business experience, Richard’s global perspective makes him uniquely qualified as an executive coach. He established Ellis Strategy Group in 2019, specializing in executive coaching, reputation management strategies, change management and business transformation, diversity and inclusion strategies, cross-cultural communications, and leadership development programs.
As Vice President of Global Corporate Relations at McDonald’s Corporation, Richard led McDonald’s Corporate Relations function across more than 25 countries worldwide. In this global executive role, Richard was responsible for strategically leading and aligning McDonald’s global Corporate Relations function.
Richard joined McDonald’s in 2003 as Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs at McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited in Toronto. In 2005 he moved to Chicago, Illinois to take on the role of Vice President, Communications for McDonald’s USA. In 2008 he returned to McDonald’s Canada as Senior Vice President Communications & Public Affairs. Richard retired (early!) from McDonald’s in 2019. Prior to joining McDonald’s, he was President & Chief Executive Officer of Weber Shandwick Worldwide (Canada) Inc., one of the world’s leading communications and public relations consultancies. Earlier in his career he held leadership communications roles at General Mills and Hydro One.
As an executive coach, Richard works with many global brands and business leaders around the world. He has provided leadership coaching to organizations like: Astellas Pharma, Aurora Advocate Healthcare, Byline Bank, Chick-fil-A, Cushman & Wakefield, Deloitte, Discover Financial, Elanco, Loop Energy, McDonald’s Corporation, Oshawa Hydro, PowerBev, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Sandford Health, Zebra Technologies.
He is an experienced board director and governance expert and an accredited member of the International Coach Federation, Institute of Corporate Directors, and Canadian Public Relations Society. He is also a member of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Public Relations Society of America. He is a certified Hogan Assessment Systems specialist.
Richard and his husband have two dogs, Cooper and Charley, and live between Toronto, Muskoka and Naples, Florida – depending on the weather. He enjoys playing tennis and golf but is terrible at both. Richard is an experienced columnist, lecturer and educator – basically he just likes to talk!
